UK student coder owns up to Facebook hack

A software development student from York has admitted hacking into Facebook servers, according to the BBC.

Glenn Mangham, 26, agreed that he had hacked Facebook systems between April and May at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday.

Mangham uploaded programs to Facebook servers. His defence lawyer said Mangham was an ethical hacker who had planned to present his findings to Facebook. Prosecutors said Mangham had saved "highly sensitive intellectual property" to work on it offline.

At one point, the FBI thought the hack could have been industrial espionage, said prosecutor Sandip Patel.

Facebook told the BBC that Mangham did not access Facebook users' information.

Mangham will be sentenced on 17 February.
