Face it, so called Anglo Saxon interests as they're called (which have nothing to do with the nations and races under this particular label) never wanted a united Europe. The first attempt towards destroying any hopes for unification came in the 70s when such interests and not only, decided to hike petro prices with the hope of crippling the then European Economic Community. The EEC at that time had real leadership, not like today's twist-some twins, and of course overcame the threat and moved on.
Today, the threat may be more real than ever; and the results, well, disastrous.
