RIM plans BlackBerry Video Store for PlayBook

September 15, 2011 — 6:06pm ET | By Mike Dano

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) said it plans to build a BlackBerry Video Store that will allow PlayBook users to watch movies and TV shows. The company promised to offer around 10,000 movies and TV shows to buy or rent through the service initially and to increase that figure with the addition of new movie releases on the same day they become available on DVD.
RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis made the announcement during a discussion of RIM's second quarter results. He said the BlackBerry Video Store would be part of the PlayBook 2.0 software upgrade that RIM plans to show off in October and release sometime thereafter. Lazaridis said the PlayBook 2.0 upgrade would include the video store as well as the addition of built-in, native email, calendar and contacts functions, the Android app player, new consumer apps and more.
RIM is just the latest company to offer its own store of movies and TV shows, an offering sparked by the success of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes store. Samsung offers a similar service through its Samsung Media Hub, and Google NASDAQ:GOOG) recently announced a similar store for its Android platform.
